No Time to Breathe!
This weekend, the stars of the FIM Borilli EnduroGP World Championship are heading to Italy and Spoleto will set the scene of the second round of the 2020 season.
Three years after hosting a GP here, the Federazione Italiana de Motociclismo (FMI) have once again decided upon Umbria and the beautiful town of Spoleto to host this year’s Italian Grand Prix. The Moto Club Spoleto, founded in 1921, will be the organisers and they are chaired by Daniele CESARETTI, who is renowned in the world of transalpine speed. Former Moto2 rider and freshly crowned 2020 World Supersport champion, Andrea LOCATELLI is also a member of the club. In 2017, this knowledgable group organised a brilliant EnduroGP round, so this 2020 edition is highly anticipated.
A City Steeped In History
For this second race of the 2020 FIM Borilli EnduroGP World Championship occasion of this second round of 2020, the Moto Club Spoleto has traced a 68-kilometre course through the Umbrian countryside. The paddock will be located in the heart of Spoleto, and all three tests will be in the same place, making it perfect for spectators! From the paddock, the stars of the EnduroGP will set off towards the Champion Enduro Test before heading to the Technomousse Extreme Test. Finally, the loop will end with the Cross Test. The Akrapovic Super Test on Friday evening will take place at the Stadio Communale…
Spoleto is located in the province of Perugia in Umbria. A city steeped in history, Spoleto was the capital of a Lombard duchy. Its Roman theatre, Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, its Basilica of San Salvatore and its Ponte delle Torri, bear witness to a great cultural wealth. Without forgetting its Rocca Albornoziana built by Pope Innocent VI, and marked by one of the most famous families in Italy: the BORGIA Family (Lucretia BORGIA having lived in this fortress). A city of 40,000 inhabitants, Spoleto is located 135 kilometres from the Italian capital, Rome, and 52 kilometres from Perugia.
Who can stop HOLCOMBE?
Unsurprisingly, the EnduroGP category gave us two days of intense and hotly contested racing at the opening round in Réquista, France, where the final results were decided within seconds – or even tenths of seconds! After a thrilling battle Steve HOLCOMBE (GB – Beta) came out on top. But the Brit has little room for manoeuvre against a horde of rivals who are determined to take the leader’s plate from him. Indeed, Brad FREEMAN (GB – Beta), Andrea VERONA (I – TM), Loïc LARRIEU (F – TM) as well as Jaume BETRIU (E – KTM) have proven in France that they have the speed to catch the Factory Beta rider.
We will also have to keep an eye on Thomas OLDRATI (I – Honda), Davide GUARNERI (I – TM), Matteo CAVALLO (F – Sherco) and Alex SALVINI (I – Honda) who will be at home and will certainly want to shine.
Not forgetting Christophe CHARLIER (F – Beta) who seems to have the weapons to fight at the forefront …
HOLCOMBE will also seek to consolidate his position at the front of the Enduro 2 category. For this, he will need to counter the attacks of LARRIEU, Danny MCCANNEY (GB – Honda), Matteo CAVALLO and Alex SALVINI…
In Enduro 1, it was hard to pick a favourite before the season got underway. But two impressive victories in France from 2019 Junior World Champion and Senior class rookie, Andrea VERONA, puts him firmly as the man to beat. The likes of OLDRATI, CHARLIER and REMES (SF – Yamaha) will have to act quickly if they don’t want to see VERONA run away.
In E3 it is difficult to know who will be able to stop Brad FREEMAN as he left his mark on the category from the very first GP. But enduro-returnee and Dakar rider Jaume BETRIU (E – KTM) seems to be a top contender, as do Davide GUARNERI (I – TM) and Cristobal GUERRERO (E – Beta).
Fantic at home?
In the Junior ranks in France, Théo ESPINASSE (F – Sherco) managed his race perfectly with an unstoppable double victory. Now another battle begins for him as he tries to defend the leader’s plate.
But the French rider will certainly be under pressure from the league of fast and talented youngsters headed by Hamish MACDONALD (NZ – Sherco), Lorenzo MACORITTO (I – Beta Boano), Wil RUPRECHT (AUS – Beta Boano), Ruy BARBOSA (CL – Husqvarna), Roni KYTÖNEN (SF – Honda) and Matteo PAVONI (I – Beta Boano).
Also watch out for Brasil’s Bruno CRIVILIN (Honda) who gained momentum throughout his weekend in France and could well come and join in this epic battle for victory.
In FIM Youth 125cc, Sergio NAVARRO (E – Husqvarna) and Jed ETCHELLS (GB – Fantic) will clearly be the men to beat after their wins in France. But, with the support of the home crowd, there is no doubt that the great Italian hopeful Claudio SPANU (I – Husqvarna) will be keen to take over at the front. But he’ll have to watch out for Hugo SVARD (SF – Fantic), Harry EDMONDSON (GB – Fantic) and Alejandro NAVARRO (E – Husqvarna)…
This Eleveit Grand Prix of Italy should prove to be one of the most spectacular yet, with so many talented riders desperate to shine. See you on September 25, 26 and 27 in Spoleto for the 2nd Grand Prix of the FIM Borilli EnduroGP World Championship, where a big party is expected!!
